Do doctors get a cut of the perscription price?

Answers:
They don't get commisions from the pharm companies, but many docs become heavily vested in them. Also, they do get kickbacks, like trips and what not from the reps. When area reps do well, they are encouraged to share with their docs.

BTW, have you noticed how your average pharm rep looks like a Miss America contestant? Think there's something to that?
No!
No, it's illegal, and unethical.
I think there is some kind of knock back to them, especially if this a new expensive one,
They must do otherwise why waft people through so quick and pass out prescriptions so readily
can you imagine if they did, they would have gold teeth and have huuuuge cars, and diamonds for eyes.hold on a minute.that sounds just like my doctor
Not unless they own the pharmacy.
Not if they have issued the normal FP10 from the surgery. If you have a private prescription for some reason, they will charge a fee for that.
No but we do get free crap with the brand name all over them.
;)
of course they do - their practise is sponsered by the pharmiciutical companys - thats why doctors just keep feeding their patients with pills.

I have suffered from sciatica for 12 months and all the dr keeps doing is giving me pain killers and anti inflammitorys - he didn't refer me to a chiropractor until I said I can't afford £6 per prescription anymore.

pills pills pills - that hides the pain - it doesnt fix the problem
I am sure sales reps are recommending which drugs are great and cost effective from the large drug company's. They may not get official money from the nhs but i am sure some nice dinners and gifts are passed around. Wink Wink!
No but...

Drug companies ply doctors with free gifts including trips, PDA's,office supplies, medical supplies, samples, meals, wine, art etc etc etc. They do this to influence prescription preference. There are often several choices of meds for each condition, and the drug companies hope they can build an allegiance with the prescriber. And it works, or they wouldn't do it! Prescribers who prescribe a lot of a company's drugs tend to get premium gifts etc.

There have been studies written on the impact of this, try searching on Medline if you are interested.
yes, no, yes, no , for your information there is some doctors in the middle ease can cut the price based on the the patient finance.
Midwife Jane is right. I worked for Johnson & Johnson for five years. Of course, nothing is blatantly obvious.
they cant do as one of our doctors doesnt like giving you them.you would think you were asking for a pot of gold.if i wanted anything i would buy my own.
prescription profits go to the pharm companies and the drug stores. The docs get cool plastic pens, and sometimes, lunch for the office staff.
well doctors get a kickback (which is a cut) if they write so many of the big exspensive new drugs . so this is why our society is so drug dependent.the doctors want money and the pharmeceutical companies want their money too.isn't that nice to think about!
No. But they probably have stock in the companies of the Rx's they write.
only on yours
no they don t but the drug companies sometimes give them hefty bonuses for using their brand prescritption so that s why they will give a script for a costly medicine that does not have a generic
NO
NO, if they do they can be prosecuted, but they get some neat gifts.
Like medical equipment, and free "seminars" in places like Hawaii
No, but I have heard that they get perks for writing the prescription, as well as sending someone in for a cat scan.
But, that is based on hearsay.
Yes, but only if they are giving a private prescription or they own a dispensing practice.
Contrary to some answers below, doctors do receive gifts from pharmaceutical companies' reps, but these must be less than £6 in vlaue & be directly related to the practice od medicine or patient care. Would you be swayed by something that cheap?
This was a rampant practice in the USA at one time and consequently the doctors invariably gave out the prescriptions on their own letterheads. But Better Business Bureau in USA led a sustained campaign against this and the practice has slowly died down. Doctors don't anymore give prescription on their own letter heads but stationery provided by the medical agents which only contains the company's advt. The docors, howeve, get free samples and occasioal gifts, "medial "tours etc.In fact, if any concrete case of commission is reported to the BBB/National medical associations the matter is pursued .Occasioal cases of this type are reported in BBB publications.
i would like to think they dont
They don't get a cut of the prescription price -- HOWEVER - they do get lots of wonderful "freebies" from drug companies that they heavily prescribe their drugs (and/or hand out their samples to their patients) each month to six weeks.

When I mean "freebies" - I'm talking tickets to professional ball games, Hawaii vacations, golf club memberships, golf clubs, hunting trips, etc. Whatever their particular interest is - that's what the drug companies cater to.
NO. otherwise i'd not be on generic medications.
Not that I know of. I work in a hospital as a C.A.
I sometimes wonder.
