Hypothesis, theory, fact?

In school I was told that science came up with a hypothesis which, if tested somewhat, attained the status of theory. Once the theory had been tested it became fact.

Is that view of the progress of science still current and, if so, can anybody give me any citations/links/details of books which support this view.

Theory is also a word given to a collection of ideas that are much more tested than the old "theory" concept you sited. Examples are germ theory, nuclear theory, evoutionary theory, electrical theory, ect. These concepts are well tested and established as fact.
Fiction.
Until another new hypothesis comes out to question it
an untested idea is theory ,
an idea that is proven to work is fact ,
(it also gives us facts if it doesn't work)
the progress of science depends on theory challenging fact .
