Why when in caves can you not tell the depth or the direction of flow of rivers?

Answers:
Usually rivers flow south but in a cave they just go downwards due to gravity. Does your compass work in a cave?
Because it's really really dark.
Beacause its dark? but if you use a light you can see which way the river is flowing. As for depth if the light is too bright you will see the reflection of the roof of the cave, use a stick to test depth.
I did not know you couldn't I, know the clarity of the water can be deceptive. but you can see the direction from anything floating or ripples spreading from a water drop
