Why doesnt neptune set alight when hit by a comet/meteor even tho its made up of flammable gases?
Answers:
Flammable means that it reacts well with oxygen. If there is no oxygen on Neptune the gases cannot react to a hot object and do not ignite.
fire requires fuel, which includes oxygen.
Oxygen isn't present on the planets
Methane is flammable, but only in the presence of free oxygen. The outer planets don't have any, not having had the benefit of photosynthetic life to make any. Earth's oxygen atmosphere, by contrast, has been around for 2.4 billion years.
Lack of Oxygen.
For a start there is no oxygen and also do you know how cold it is out there??
No oxygen there to react with. Same reason dropping a lit match into a fuel tank won't make the car explode. All the fuel in the world won't ignite if there's not oxygen there to oxidize it.
It depends on what kind of gases Neptune is made up of. Some gases are flamable - some are not. Also, some gases need to be mixed before they ignite.
I dont know but i heard Uranus would.
Interesting, if the atmosphere was methane and you had an oxygen supply to a nozzle the oxygen would burn. Then any methane breathing neptunians? would say that oxygen is inflammable gas, would they be right?
