Can cows swim?
When she was younger my friend's dad told her that the farmer used to herd his cows across a mile of open sea off the coast of Ireland to graze on an island there. Seems implausible to me but she is adamant. What do you think?
Answers:
yes they can

Yea they can.
no they can not swim she has her story mixed up . I was raised on a farm and never had a cow that could swim in fact we had to get them out of the mud because they got stuck in the mud near our beaver pond
yes they can and are very good at it x
Yes, cows can swim. That farmer probably probably tied one cow to the back of his boat and rowed over to the island and the rest followed. Same on the trip back. Your friend is adamant because she believes her dad told her the truth and I think he did!
Yes they can, as all mammals can swim, even though some don't like to. I don't doubt your mistrust of this story, though, because cows are very heavy and probably couldn't swim a mile of open sea . you never know though!
Yes cows can swim, all mammals can. In herding cows across a mile of open sea however, it seems most likely that it would be done at low tide and the cows would probably wade through fairly shallow water for most of the time.
There are plenty of examples of livestock on small offshore islands. Some might have been taken there by boat and some are rumoured to have swum ashore after being shipwrecked. Probably most walked some of the time and swam the rest.
If you need further evidence of this ability, see if you can find some film of a wildebeest migration. They are in the same family as cattle and have to swim every year, admittedly not a mile but they have crocodiles to deal with instead.
Yes, cows can swim. So can horses. But the cow will mostly float. It propels itself by moving its feet like running in a field.
I went to ask.com and found out that, yes, indeedy, cows can swim. They will never be Olympic competitiors, and would prefer not to, but they CAN swim. There are very few, if any, animals that can't swim.
Do you remember a commercial some time ago with a swimming elephant? If elephants can swim, why not a cow?
And what about all those old western movies, with the cowboys herding the cattle across the river? The cattle and the horses were swimming, were'nt they?
Those cows that were stuck in the mud could'nt swim because they were STUCK! That would be like asking us to swim with a concrete block chained to our ankle. Besides, cows don't swim for sport! Why swim across a pond, when it's difficult and the food and water you want is right there around the edges?
yes i think they can cowpokes, the cattle on Rawhide used to do it.
no
Yup. A mile of open sea was a bit risky though, but in theory they could have done it.
Yes like most Quadrupeds when forced or in danger cows will swim. Bulls have been known to go to extreme lengths to get in to the field with some friendly little cow, even swimming amongst other things.
Yes
Yes cows can swim.I live in Bangladesh and whenever I go to my village I see them swimming in shallow water. But I dont think they can swim in the open sea, that's to deep.
I wouldn't necessarily call it swimming, because Cows float in the water and they just ease across actually gen tly and slowly. Its kind of them moving their feet and gently gliding acrross the water.
Yes, cows do swim.. during cattle drives they often are herded across rivers and other bodies of water. I dont know about a mile of open sea but they can swim quite well.
I did find a reference to cattle swimming 3 km across a river though.. http://www.ipak.org/niger/first.html.

Hello, yes cows can swim. They don't like to but if they are pushed into deep water they will swim and get them selfs across to dry land.
