What is the biggest spider in the uk?

Answers:
Dolomedes fimbriatus
(The Raft Spider)

These are the largest spiders found in Britain with the female gaining a size of 22 mm and the male only 10 - 13 mm. The males are more clearly marked than the females.

These spiders are fairly common in southern England in areas like swamps or marshes where there is permanent water. The further north you go the less likely you are to see one of these beasties.

UK's Biggest Spider Dies

British arachnophobes can breathe a sigh of relief. Britain's largest spider has died at the ripe old age of 20.

Lucretia, a goliath birdeater tarantula, had been the star attraction at Stratford Butterfly Farm in Warwickshire until her recent demise.

She was 10in in diameter, about the size of a dinner plate, and originally came from Guyana in South America.

The raft spider, the one that can walk on water
Dolomedes fimbriatus
the one we caught in the living room the other day. it's body was the size of a hand.
Tegenaria parietina. The females can have a leg span of over 10 cm, 15 cm has been reported. Their fangs can pierce human skin, but the poison won't do too much damage. They are eaten by Pholcus phalangioides, much smaller, delicate, but fearless. Se pics of both on the following page. Both live in buildings - so beware!
one in your bedroom
