They are bits of lymphatic tissue called "palatine tonsils," or more commonly known as tonsils. They help to protect the body against infections. They often get infections and when they become swollen it is called "tonsillitis."

Uvula. Depends. The dangley punching-bag-like-shaped-thing right? Yeah. Everyone is saying epiglottis, but im pretty sure its the Uvula.
The flap of skin that covers your trachea (the entrance to your windpipe and your esophagus) is called your epiglottis. It covers your windpipe when you eating and your esophagus when your breathing,.
The wiggly bit, as you elegantly put it, is the UVULA. On the sides of the throat are the tonsils. Down the throat, below where can be normally seen is the epiglottis.
Uvula - small fleshy flap of tissue that hangs in the back of the throat and is an extension of the soft palate.
Epiglottis - a thin cartilaginous flap that covers the entrance to the larynx during swallowing, preventing food from entering the trachea.
Tonsil - either of two small masses of lymphatic tissue situated one on each side of the back of the mouth.

The epiglottis..one of my favourite words.

Thank you for reminding me of it.
