Can anyone enlighten me about storm chasing & the meteorologist group VORTEX please?
I am a british student with a passionate interest in storms and tornography/meteorology, and always have since I was a little girl. I would like to become a storm chaser once I (hopefully) settle in OKLAHOMA. Can anyone with experience please let me know how to get involved with such activities and possibly tell me about the storm chasing group VORTEX, which I've heard about on the interent? It would be a dream come true to storm chase with them. Please help and tell me what you can, I really appreciate it. Xx

You need to read Doswell's chasing FAQ and you need to check out the FAQ and the other resources at Stormtrack.

VORTEX was an experiment that was intended to collect data in and around tornadic storms in order to better understand the environment favorable for tornadogenesis. This happened back in 1994 & 1995, and a VORTEX-99 occured in 1999. In order to chase with these guys--remember they're doing it for research purposes--you'd probably have to be affiliated in some way through the NSSL (http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/) or OU.
Hi Alice! I would love to storm chase someday..I suggest doing a yahoo or google search on Vortex. You get really close to the tornado and supposedly it is a rush.pure adrenaline. I think though you have to pay up to $3000 to chase with companies. The Discovery Channel has some documentaries that they regularly show in the evening hours about storm chasers. Good luck on achieving your dream! PS-I used to live in Dallas, Texas and we had a tornado go right over our house one year in 1989.was not fun at all! Really scary!
