Where do all the names of the animals come from?

Latin (quite often a mixture of Latin and Greek) was the language used by educated people and by the church. So it is not very surprising that Latin is used to give scientific names to animals and plants.

Example : Alces alces (Latin) = moose (English) = irvas (Serbian)
Sometimes plants get the names of their finders, but its a rare case with animals. Sometimes latin names describe animal in few words, often word or two.
