How did we (the humans) make medicine in the first place?

Answers:
people have always relied on plants for nourishment. through chance and experimenting, they discovered some plants are good for food, some are poisonous, and that some produce bodily changes such as pain relief and healing.

this knowledge was passed on verbally from generation to generation, with each generation adding to and refining the body of knowledge. Every culture some herbal knowledge as part of its tradition.

Even animals know this.. have you watched your dog eat grass for a stomach ache? Or a cat chew leaves for digestion (prevents hairballs)

herbalism is the basis for current medicine
herbs and plants
We discovered ancient plants and herbs have healing qualities, and still use most of them today
Because they make the disease in the first place to get money
Figured out certain plants have healing qualities. From their, mixing leaves, roots, herbs, etc.
..... they discovered herbs and plants in nature .....
Trial and error i suppose like most things.

I like to read the answers on this one, go for the herb & whatever if that satisifyes you. but wake up one day without the knowlege of that, you will run for a tylonol 3 if you have one avaible.
PS. NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THESE HERBLE OR HOME REMIDIES.
sheer luck I guess then being the inquisitive types we are it was just a case of early experimentation
it depends on the type of the disease the cause of the disease and the parts of the body it affects and cripples. first such things (medicine-jadi buti in sanskrit )were roots of the plants and were made probably based on the serendipitously acquired knowledged collected by indian masters of natural aiyurved specialist (hrishis and munis as they are called).
Way back in the beginning we lived as part of the Animal Kingdom. Therefore we watched the animals.

Our nearest cousins (DNA) would have been of particular interest.

We would have and still do have Medicine Men (Shamans), these would pass this knowledge on (whether the leaves, bark, roots and berries killed or cured).

Further than that we would have eaten the above as part of our diet anyway, the Shaman would have noticed if there was a change in health.

This would have been passed on as campfire training and become Tribal memory.

Then came Religion, the Witch Craft burnings destroyed a lot of that knowledge (in Europe).

We are only now relearning the various arts from the Third World Wise Men, and indeed a lot of our medicines are again of natural form.

ie. boiled Willow Bark or Feverfew equal Asprin.
medicine has been developing since the caveman were areound. there is evidence of them perfoming surgery- in certaincases they would drill holes in peoples skulls (a practice that is still used today). people survived this procedure (evidence=bone remodelling at the edge to the hole). The also knew the healing properties af some of the herbs, trees and plants around them. some of the cures they made were very effective and scientists have since isolated compounds that are the active part and make this or a derivative as a medication. The other thing that was a big part of medicine was the medicine man (called different things depending on where the people were) Illness was thought to caused by evil spirits and the role of the medicine man was to remove teh evil spirits. this has largely been superceded by science but there are still faith healers etc that try to heal people by spiritual means.

the beginings or modern medicine probably begain with the greeks and romans guys like hippocrates and galen. although a lot of their writings were wrong they dominated medincine for a long time

later when the concept of science and studying the body and the world in a more scientific manner was born we started to learn more about dieases how to treat them how the body works and that has developed into teh medical processes we have now
we got medicine from natutre
We needed somethin 2 help wi hangovers after discoverin alcohol.
Hallo G B.
Well If we go back far enough, we would find that we used to eat a lot of Grasses Fruit and Berries and leaves, some of these held large amounts of Toxins, which our bodies could not handle, one of the ways to get rid of some of these happened to be a Clay based mud, and kaolin is another, Chalk being a further "earth cure" and then there is Charcoal, just burnt wood? , from there people tried all sorts, PLEASE MAKE SURE IF YOU WISH TO TRY STRANGE PLANTS< please rub the smallest touch onto the inside of your lip for an hour, if it burns or makes you feel unwell, Do not use it!

I reckon you should look at http://medicine.hammocksurvivalguide.com.
There are well over 1,000 articles about the subject. Though I'm not sure if it details the history of medicine. IF it does then I haven't come across it yet, but then I haven't read all the articles.
prehistoric people discovered herbs which have carried on to modern day today
through herbs and plants. but now we know some herbs and plants can kill or cause severe allergic reactions, so these get tested on animals first. us humans are so mighty and powerful
