Square both sides.
8n^2 + 1 = (integer)^2
Subtract 1 from both sides.
8n^2 = (integer)^2 - 1
Divide both sides by 8.
n^2 = [(integer)^2 - 1]/8
Take the square root of each side.
n = -sqrt([(integer)^2 -1)]/8) or +-sqrt([(integer)^2 -1)]/8)
