It can have some very, very bad effects. I will describe them in detail below. The biggest risk associated with use of ecstacy, however, is that it is illegal. Being sent to prison is probably going to be more dangerous than anything the drug does to you. In terms of social harm, physical harm, and addictiveness, its has been rated as LESS dangerous than either tobacco and alcohol (see citation below).
Most of the deaths resulting from ecstacy have been from overheating. As a type of amphetamine, it increases the body temperature, and ecstacy also reduces the user's sensitivity to heat and thirst. This makes it overall a great way to overheat and be blissfully unaware of it until you suffer a heat stroke or something. Of course, if you are not in a hot area, this may be no risk at all, really.
Interestingly enough, ecstacy also causes retention of water. The blood can become so dilute that it causes swelling in the brain, and even death. One of the more-publicized ecstacy fatalities was caused by a user who drank lots and lots of water to counteract the above overheating effect.
Ecstacy can cause other effects too. Clenching and gnashing of teeth is well-known (some frequent users chew gum when they do ecstacy to make this less painful) and can cause mouth ulcers. Ecstacy is also known to decrease sexual desire, which is why some people mix it with viagra when they take it. And any impurities that are in your dose may be much more dangerous than ecstacy itself.
I think that latter concern and the legal issues probably make this drug a non-starter, myself. You, of course, can make up your own mind. Hope this helps!

i saw a documentary about ecstasy, and they did a cat scan on this girl that used for 6 mos. she had visible holes in her brain tissue. so i would say very bad for you.
If you consider holes in your brain bad then yes ecstasy is bad for you.

depanding on if you're sensible or not. although i'm anti drugs i still believe that the people who take drugs should know how to do it safely. Ecstasy stops the control of water in your brain, therefore not drinking while you dance would dehydrate your brain, and drinking water when you are relaxed will swell your brain, causing it to be crushed inside your own skull. either way you will be in a coma and die!

It's banned because the government is trying to protect you. So yes it is bad for you. If used properly in moderation etc. the effects are not large (same as alcohol etc.), but because of its potential problems it is banned.
