Your views on Sustainable Graphic Design i.e. recycled substrates, vegetable based inks etc. is it important?

Do we need to worry seriously about the methods we use to produce the advertising we see all around us everyday? Is this topic even in the minds of most people - Designers or consumers?

Answers:
It is not in the minds of most people, but it does become important when we discuss recycling. A lot of people favor recycling paper, but they don't understand that to recycle paper, it is essentially soaked in a giant vat of bleach in order to get the inks out. Once the inks are out, then we are stuck with a giant vat of ink-soaked bleach, which means we have a vat full of toxic waste.

So people who favor recycling should favor alternatives to current inks. However, the fact is that most people who favor recycling are really ignorant of the processes. They think only about used paper going in and recycled paper coming out, and never think about what happens in between. That means that they don't know about, or care about, alternatives such as vegetable-based inks.

George Washington Carver did work on this issue, among many many others, when he was at Tuskegee Institute. He was given almost no money for his lab, so he taught his students how to scrounge around through ald junk heaps, how to use vegetables, and how to create chemicals from natural processes. Carver is most known for his work on sweet potatos and peanuts, of course, but those are just two of his many contributions.

Like you, he was concerned about making sure that everything that was used once could be used again safely and effectively.
Absolutely..recycled chip pan fat, add some ink and use it to market chips. Visual and sensory advertising..yummy
