My son is doing a project at school and needs to know the name of the most expensive microscope in the world?
Please just sensible answers as my son has just started secondary school and wants to do well. Thanks for your help
Answers:
SEM. Scanning Electron Microscope. They cost roughly around 500,000 dollars and show details down to around 2 microns across.
Electron Microscopes are indeed pretty expensive, but can resolve images 1000 times smaller than suggested above.
My work has recently bought a new microscope at work which is probably the best Light Microscope you can buy - it's a Leica Fluorescence Microscope which as well as having binocular lens for viewing also has a high resolution camera attached. It also has an automated stage and can scan 8 slides automatically and the powerful image analysis software analyzes, measures and reports on every image that meets your desired criteria in terms of size, shape, colour. This cost us roughly £100,000.
Scanning electron microscopes are in the 500,000 range but a good atomic force microscope pushes it close. Also there are some pretty expensive laser scanning microscopes.
Microscopes need to do two things (most of the time only magnification is considered).
A. Provide horizontal resolution (the scanning electron microscope is particulary good)
B. Provide a good "depth of image". Some of the interferometric and laser based methods are very good at this
In the end it depends what you want to do.
