Is Agaricus Vaporarius common in the New Forest?

Answers:
It is not poisonous, and is related to the field mushroom, Agaricus campestris,(the one you usually find in the shops) not fly agaric, Amanita muscaria, which is poisonous and found only under birch trees. This autumn I have picked, and eaten, many Agaricus spp from The New Forest but am not expert enough to to identify the precise species, but I am still here to tell the tale
It's poisonous so I wouldn't try eating one, it's related to the fly agaric (red with white spots). Don't know what the abundance is in the new forest, but they do grow in woodland.
Don't know about the New Forest but it's "rare" generally in the UK and not easy to distinguish from a number of other "mushroom - like" agarics. It is not poisonous.
I'm not sure about this species - fungi can be very difficult to identify (even if you're an expert) so I wouldn't ever risk eating wild mushrooms as some can be very poisonous!

If you're interested specifically in the flora of the new forest, why not see if you can contact a ranger or education centre in the area - I'm sure there must be one and they would be delighted to help! Try searching on the web or asking the local area council.
