Help me please with maths :'(?

I have a question that says calculate the first value of the three-point moving average for the data.

I have a table aswell which shows the number of people who sign up for adult education classes each term.

What does this question meen?

Answers:
A moving average is a way to smooth out variations in data. LEt's say you have the number of people who signed up for the class every month for six months. Example:

12 people signed up in January
14 in Feb
20 in Mar
19 in April
17 in May
19 in June
The first point of the 3-point moving average is the average of the first three data in your set. For this example, it's the average of 12, 14, and 20, which is 15.33. The second point of the moving average skips the first data point and averages the second, third, and fourth points. Thats 17.67. The next point of the 3-point moving average is the average of 20, 19, and 17, which is 18.67 . And so on. You can see that the 3-point moving average doesn't jump around as much as the actual nymber of people who signed up. That's why it is said the moving average smooths out your data.
the question wants you to work out the first 3 over all averages of adults per year on your chart of adults signing up for educational classes ie how many adults per year signed up it could be the percentage of adults
The three-point moving average is the average of a point and the two previous points (three points total).

So the first value is the sum of the people signing up for the first three terms, divided by three.

If you carry this calculation out over time, you get a smoother trend line that can better estimate the overall number of people who sign up for a class, and better forecast as possible increase or decrease in the number of people. Graph the table, and the three-term moving average if you don't understand what I mean - the picture says a lot more than these words.

Hope this helps!

Try this and other sites on Google. I put in moving averages maths, and got lots of detailed explanations. Ask you teacher. Thats what he/she is there for and its important that you make an effort to find out what you need to know. It is not your fault that there was not enogh time in the lesson. Dont fret. It will come to you when it is explained properly. Good luck
A three point moving average is where you calculate the average of a 3 numbers in a series. You repeat this mutliple times discarding one number and adding the next one in the series.

To calculate a moving average

Assume you measure the number of days it rained each month.
The table will look like

Jn Fb Mr Ap My Jn Jl Ag Sp Oc Nv Dc
9. 12. 15. 12. 15. 6. 3. 0. 3. 9. 12. 9.

You calculate the average for Jan, Feb, Mar = (9+12+15)/3 =12
The you calculate average for Feb, Mar, Apr = 13
Then for Mar, Apr, May = 14
etc. etc. till Oct, Nov, Dec = 10

the series of numbers 12, 13, 14, .. 10 is called the moving average.

The purpose of a moving average is to "even" out some of the randomness that occurs and gives you a trend of how things are going. It is used to see how the share prices of a company change, or for global warming, where you want to see if things really are getting hotter or colder over extended periods, or was your summer just very hot.

I am assuming the question is asking for the first average (i.e the average of people for terms 1, 2, 3).
