The breathalyser was introduced in the UK in 1967.

The Road Traffic Act 1962 entitled courts to take note of any results from blood, urine or breath analysis. In practise the latter was never used.

The Road Traffic Act 1967 introduced the use of breath testing devices for road-side screening only

The only approved device available in 1967 was the ALCOTEST 80 and was commonly called the 'breathalyser.' A second device called the ALCOLYSER was introduced a few years latter.

Both devices relied on expired breath being blown through a glass tube containing acid dichromate absorbed onto silica gel. Alcohol in the breath turned the yellow crystals green. There were several issues about using these devices but they were effective for many years.

Legislation was passed in 1981 that allowed for the introduction of approved devices which gave a much clearer indication of pass or fail. The first electronic device to meet these needs was the ALCOLMETER SAL-2A and was approved in 1987.

The Road Traffic Act 1981 introduced the use of substantive breath testing equipment and provided a prescribed breath alcohol limit of 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath. Quite a few instruments have been approved since this time.

In general parlance all of the breath testing devices, screening and substantive, have been known as 'breathalysers' by the public.
