Please can you help me with my civil engineering homework?

You measure an angle with a theodolite several times and record the following observations:
114° 27’ 49”
114° 27’ 37”
114° 27’ 39”
114° 27’ 41”
114° 27’ 43”
114° 27’ 44”

What is your best estimate of the true value of the angle? Give your answer to 1 decimal place of a second.

What is the standard error of the observations? Give your answer to 1 decimal place of a second. Show all working

Note: The denotion used is A' B' C" =
(A degrees, B minutes and C seconds)

The method is simple.

Find out the standard deviation(S.D) and the mean from the given data. It involves simple stastics.

the first column is X
the second column is (X-mean)
the third column is (X-mean)2

114' 27' 49"-----------6.833"----------.
114' 27' 37"-----------5.167" (negative)----0.01"
114' 27' 39"-----------3.167" (negative)----0.01"
114' 27' 41"-----------1.167" (negative)----0.001"
114' 27' 43"------------0.833"---------.
114' 27' 44"------------1.833"---------. 0.001"

sum =686' 46' 13"
sum of the last column 0.03201"

Mean = 114' 27' 42.167"
(114 degrees 27 minutes 42,167 seconds)

use the standard deviation formula, you get, S = 0' 0' 4.23"

In stastics there is a certain level of confidence involved in predicting the answer. the most used is 95%.

So, with 95% confidence, the error E = ±1.9599 (SD)
E = ± 8.29"

Standard error is given by ± sqrt(S.D) / n
(where n = no of observations)

Standard error = ± 1.73"

The mosr probable value is " Mean value ± error"

So, the most probable value is 114' 27' 42.167" ± 0' 0' 1.73"
Shaddup and do your own homework ya lazyass.
I don't know much about engineering, but this looks like it has got mathematics involved, which I am good at. So I'll give it a shot.

The first question is basically asking you to find the average of all of them, the mean. In case you don't know, that means add all the results together and divide by the number of results there were, in this case 6. Remember to give your answer to one decimal place.

As I don't know much about engineering I don't understand the second question, but it looks as if it may be looking for an outlier by the way it is phrased.

Good luck.
convert everything to decimal, then average like normal, and then convert back to ddmmss
114 27 42.2

standard error i think is standard deviation

gosh u should use better place for such answers, u know there r not many intelligent people here

All of your estimates are good. However, for a "go" situation, use the largest or highest and for a "no-go" situation, use the smallest figure. Good-luck.
