solve the following simultaneous equations

1.4x-y=5
2x+y=-2

Add the second equation to the first - the "y's" cancel - and you get 3.4x = 3. Divide both sides by 3.4, and x = 0.0882. or in fraction form (multiply top and bottom by 5) x = 15/17.
4x-y=5
-2(2x+y=-2 )

-4x - 2y = 4
4x - y = 5
-3y = 9
y = -3
plug y back into the first equation
4x - (-3) = 5
4x + 3 = 5
4x = 2
x = 1/2

ANSWER
x = 1/2
y = -3
2x+ y = 2
and 1.4x-y=5
Add them together and you get 3.4x -y+y = 7

ie - 3.4x = 7
so x = 7/3.4
