How is radiation used in monitoring the pollution of rivers?

is there a specific type of radiation used? i will be honestly most humbly grateful if you can help
thank you in advance

Answers:
I don't know.
However I would guess that a radioactive source is placed at a set depth and a detector\geiger counter held just above the water.

Presumably the more particles in the water restrict the number of radioactive particles detected by the counter, so the dirtier the water the lower the radiation count.

Smoke alarms work in a similar manner
probabily, you can see the diffences betteen transmited spectrun and recieved spectrum
