Is it more eco-friendly to use a dishwasher than to wash up in the sink?

Answers:
No. Dishwashers use more water, plus electricity. Plus tablets, which require more packaging.
And they are more intensive to manufacture than a sink unit, so that's even more energy wasted.
wastes loads more water
i have wondered this, as id assume dishwasher would use les water, but then again it would wash then rinse, but then again dishwasher uses electric and washin up dont , so i dont no
Most are AAA rated so are economical.

I would part with my husband before I got rid of my dishwasher though if thats any help :)
Only if you have 12 gallons of water to spare?
certainly, you don't have the moral dilemma of watching the detergent go down the drain.
Well the adverts on tv are saying that it is.
I wouldn't have thought so, and on a more selfish note it's a lot cheaper to wash up at the sink too.
No, it uses more water and lots more electricity!
I wouldn't know, I can't pee in the sink for dirty dishes
More friendly to wash up the sink.if u limit the amount of water and soap u use..in other words..don't let the water run while u are scrubing the utencils
The mild dishwashing soap is MUCH more eco-friendly than the harsh, chemical-laden dishwashER soap. Both go down the drain and into the eco-system. Which do you think is safer?
It's not an easy answer and it depends:
A diswasher if probably more efficient if you're washing a full load on the economy setting (uses less heat & water).
Heat drying is a definite killer--uses lots of electricity. Even without heat drying, the motor uses some electricity.

To maximize the efficiency of sink washing, you have to stoppper the sink, fill the sink with soapy water, using the least amount of water you can, wash all the dishes, empty the sink, restopper and rinse using the minimum amount of water. Dry with a towel or in a rack. For most people, they'll use more water in the sink than the machine, but less electricity.

The detergent vs soap is probably about the same.

If you're talking about a small amount of dishes, sink is definitely better because a dishwasher uses the same amount of water for a full or partial load.
