My wife is a hairdresser, and would like to know why hairs grow in ears(surely not to keep them warm!)?

Answers:
It's to avoid the incidence of earwigs.
same reason as it grown in the nose and genital area, it is a form of protection from bugs etc
The hairs pick up vibrations, which help us hear better, they also work like nose hair, to prevent stuff from getting in there.
i dont know but i have that problem every time i cut them, they grow back
Keeps dirt from getting inside the ear canal..Early forms of men and women had a lot more hair intheir ears then we do now.
to help keep them clean,,and keep out insects
IT GROWS IN EARS TO MUFFLE THE NONSENSE THE HAIRDRESSER IS TALKING.
to filter out bits of dirt, grit and stuff that might find its way in there ? im just guessing but it seems a good theory as any
The visible hairs of the outer ear prevent small organisms e.g. insects and dirt from entering.

The hairs in the inner ear, whihc arent visible from the outside are designed for hearing.
we have ear hair to protect your inner ears from airbourne dirt / pollen etc in the same way as we have nasal hair.
I always thought it was nature's way of compensating for hair loss on the head!
its a form of protection
like when eyebrows grow bushy on old men
because they are more accident prone in later years
Hair in the ears is to keep things out. Plus I have seen men with hair on the tops of their ears that looked like a werewolf and yes it is there to keep the ears warm.
protection. Protects sensitive parts from dust, particles, even bugs maybe. This, and wax of course.
Hair grows in order to form a barrier against foreign bodies entering e.g dust and dirt.
they grow in mens ears to block out all the nagging and moaning that your wife does
Funnily enough my husband was asking me that the other day when I was cutting his hair. He has also started sprouting out of his nose. I told him that it must be nature compensating for hair loss on top of his head, which when he was younger grew down over his ears and could be flicked around, therefore keeping bugs etc out of his ears and nose. but now he's older. and going bald. nature needs to prevent nasties from taking up residence in the huge space between his ears!!!
