Dealing with reciprocating air compressors, what does compressoin efficiency mean?
Answers:
When you say 'compression efficiency' I think you probably mean 'isothermal efficiency'.
When air is compressed part of the work input is used in needlessly heating the air. The ideal, but unattainable, minimum work input will occur when compression is isothermal (i.e. when it takes place at constant temperature). The efficiency of any real compression process is thus measured against this ideal and is called the 'isothermal efficiency'.
Isothermal efficiency = (isothermal work input)/(actual work input)
The amount of compression delivered by each stroke of the piston in relation to the amount of intake against the amount of slip past the rings.
And following Letsee's answer also the amount of air that can be drawn in on the induction stroke compared with the actual capacity of the cylinder.
