Because evolution is not a chain (one species evolving into . and therefore replaced by . the next). Only creationists have such a wrong understanding of evolution.
Evolution is not a chain, but a tree. Each species is a branch out of which other branches can sprout.
Anyone who can't understand the difference does not understand evolution AT ALL, and is rejecting it out of pure ignorance of what the theory actually says.

We didn't. We're on 2 different evolutionary branches. however, if walk backwards on those two branches, you'll run accross an intersection where we share a common ancestor.

You are a fool, Jamie. No-one has EVER said that humans evolved from apes and monkeys, just that it seems almost certain monkeys, apes and humans share a common ancestor. When you typed this question in, Yahoo! prompted you that the same question had been asked many, many, many times, but I guess you were too lazy to look!

All creatures are cousins although vastly distant. Nothing around today evolved from anything else around today, it all goes back to common ancestors and different branches of life took different random paths.
Evolution is just a way of saying that children resemble but are not identical to their parents. Combine this with the fact that not all children will survive to have children of their own and evolution becomes obvious.
