Is it man's arrogance that has lead to the misconception we have evolved from the present day apes?
Today, for the hundreth time, I heard someone say "If we evolved from apes then why are apes still around?"
Why can people not accept we evloved together from a common ancestor? Is it perhaps that we think we are supuerior and therefore must have evolved from today's apes rather than we both evolved together to exploit different ecological niches?
Answers:
I think a lot of these questions come from people just vacuously repeating what they read on anti-science websites. This is an argument that is many decades old and based on a misunderstanding of the evolutionary process. They seem to believe that every member of one species gradually changes until they are so different that they become a new species and the parent species is entirely converted en masse. They don’t understand that modification with descent involves multiple branching – it’s not a tree it’s a bush. They also think that evolution proceeds merely by mutation and is a purely random process, and so, incapable of forming complex biological systems. In short, they completely misunderstand evolution and are not interested in educating themselves. They may still disagree with evolution if they ever bothered to understand it properly but they have no wish to pursue it and argue from a position of ignorance.
I would also guess that most of these people believe humans are better than all other organisms – the crown jewel of creation – the ultimate species – this is the height of arrogance.
Man did not evolve from apes. it insults apes to say that he did. the ape does not wage war on his own kind!
I think it's more a failure of imagination and a lack of understanding of the basis of evolutionary thought than it is arrogance.
People are stupid and don't often accept what they cannot comprehend. It works in both directions, of course.
I see that one alot as well. I have been thinking about writing up a pat answer and just pasting it everytime I see the question. I am also thinking about doing that with Loch Ness monster questions and questions about finding a reputable online business that will make you lots of money while sitting at home.
The problem is that most people who refute evolution do not bother to research it. They sit back and use "common sense" as an argument. Science has not always been the most popular subject in school with students. I loved it, was the only one in my class who took 4 years of it in high school. A lot of people get into adult life without an understanding of science and what it is all about.
I guess some people cling to the notion of a group of scientists are bent on overthrowing the world with the radioactive mutant monsters they have created, but first they have to convince everyone that the bible is wrong. Ed Wood would have loved to make that movie.
Ignorance rather than arrogance. If people respond to attention-grabbing headlines rather than reading serious and well-researched books and papers on the topic, then they will continue to believe cr*p which is completely wrong.
We did evolve from apes, just not present-day apes.
It's not arrogance. It's ignorance.
Humans are both arrogant and extremely stupid. They can't understand even the most basic concepts in science. You can't expect them to understand a thing about evolution. At least 95 % of us are like that unfortunately.
people refuse the fact because they do not know most of the evidence we have uncovered in the region around Africa, such as Australopithecus, and various other earlier forms of Homosapien erectus. They are ignorant to the basic structural and behavioral similarities.
And a person previously said that apes do not wage wars against each other, they actually do, for power, apes will fight, and for territory, certain species will fight. Their wars may not be more then a big fight, but in their kingdom, it is the equivalent.
Even though the world has grown and proliferated into a global village, the human race still consists of 99.99% idiots.! They still eat drink act and react just like their animal ancestors and never bother about critical thinking and scientific aptitude in daily life.
Thats why they still believe that evolution is all about some damned monkey getting down from a tree one fine morning and walking around to finally grow out into a fullblown bipedal sapien ( like the video shots of the once famous music album-FAT BOY SLIM ) !
Well, the good news is that the remaining 0.01% is smart enough to rule the world at the expense of the stupider majority..Hi Hi Hi.. thats the way evolution goes in a socially advanced anf globalised memetic community like ours.
Be happy that you belong to the smarter minority. Knowledge is at your command. And thats what is gonna rule the world tomorrow!
I know it's hard to believe but many people fear knowledge and close their minds, resulting in ideas being formed without using logic and reasoning.
This is the hundredth time that I've heard some evolutionist say we didn't evolve from an ape, we evolved from a common ancestor.
This is a silly argument. The alleged common ancestor would would ape-like, so we might as well call it an ape.
This distracts from the heart of the matter which is that man has not evolved from any non-human. Every hominid fossil is either clearly human or clearly 'ape'.
For any kind of animal to evolve into another kind of animal requires the addition of *lots* of genetic information. The alleged mechanism is mutations. But observed mutations do not add information. They tend to result in a loss of information.
It's about time people woke up to just how much of a fairy tale this evolutionary philospohy really is. Check the facts.

Only indirectly. People who say that say it becuase a preacher, or their parents, or their teachers tell them that, and those people say that becuase they learned it from Creationists, who are, to a person, lying frauds.
(See Kent Hovind, famed Creationist, who was just convicted of tax fraud)
No, I don't think it is man's arrogance that has led to the misconception that we evolved from modern day apes. It has nothing to do with arrogance, just people who do not have all the facts. If you had said man's ignorance I would probably have said yes.
No not arrogance, more a limited conceptual framework.
If somebody firmly holds the belief that all that exists now is all that has ever existed (don't ask how they can, but some do) then the only conceptual option is that evolution refers to current species.
However using reason to confront the absurdity is about as useful as trying to teach a goldfish to ride a bicycle. So really you might just as well accept that some people prefer mythology to science and devote your energy to something less frustrating.
Another reason is that its easier to grasp the concept that A leads to B leads to C leads to D, rather than the complex web that is evolution.
If you think about the way that its taught in schools - that fish evolved first, grew lungs and made it onto land, became amphibians, became reptiles then birds and mammals, its a conclusion thats easy to draw unless you're really listening. its a simple way to make young children understand evolution, but it is essentially confusing. Its just easier to comprehend.
Evolutionarily speaking, we are all bony fish
What would arrogance have to do with it? No we did not evolve from "todays" apes. Humans and apes evolved side by side from a common ancestor. I've also got a comment for JJ's answer..Yes apes do wage war against other troops of apes. This has been shown many times on the discovery chanel and many other nature shows.you can find info about it on the internet. There has even been accounts of abuse, and neglect towards their own young in the wild!
