How far will you wade before you will sink or swim?. Metaphorically speaking?

When I was younger, I would be on the verge of sinking before I would ask for help. Now that I'm older, it's still hard, but I'm quicker to call the life guard for help than I was before!
Pretty far, but i'm a good swimmer

i refuse to sink, if i do then that means i've lost the will..
I.m going to wade until I'm ready to swim and then try not to sink.
