Why do we have horrible dreams?

Answers:
One reason for nightmares may be a way of our unconscious to get our attention about a situation or problem that you have been avoiding. It is time to take notice and confront a problem or situation. Nightmares serve an important purpose in showing you what is troubling you from within you deeper levels.
because of depression
Well, that nice sleepy man can't be everywhere and he has an alter ego who must be related to goblins as he is decidedly nasty. But, let me share a secret with you: he is terrified of feathers, so those natty little dream catchers you can buy really do stop him bothering you while you sleep. xx
We have horrible dreams because we are equal opportunity employers, and need to keep our phsychologists in the money!

Watching horrible movies or thinking horrible things in mind.
i read somewhere that dreams are based on scenarios that take place during the day or that already took place days ago, recently even, and some things that affect our subconscious without we noticing, translate into our dreams in different shapes and forms. Dreams evolve from things that mark us over the day! maybe u just had a bad day and ur subconscious transformed it into a horrible dream! nightmare.
It might be that we have horrible dreams because we have unresolved psychological issues. If I'm stressed in 'real' life, I'm much more likely to have nightmares.

Or they could just be random, dogs have nightmares too. our dog used to yap away when he was asleep and he'd wake up terrified, and I can't imagine that he (in his pampered life) had any unresolved problems weighing on his mind.
maybe we watch too many horror films? I had a bad one last night---was in a haunted house eeewwwkkkkk.
because of people like me?

sadism was named after me!
you have horrible and disastrous dreams because you think about horrible things at night and watch like really scary movies. i watch Crime Scene Investigation and nothing happens to me at night. About the part where i said you watch really scary movies and stuff, you don't really believe it right? ( that was my guess. ) hope you figure out the problem! before it's too late! or something! good luck!
well this may not be very scientific but I think every tiny bit of information we recieve is absorbed into the unconcious (which is way further hidden in the brain or mind than the sub concious) like a sponge, even stuff we barely pay attention to whilst awake. then an unchecked sleeping brain runs wild replaying all the info; the sights the sounds tastes the things we have read, its all played back and thats what makes all of it so frightening or so nice, its all instinctual and even physical, its the closest we are to the animal state. like orgasms in our sleep. Its all being played back and interpreted by a brain without reasoning ability, its like the brain is in it's natural state.
So that we can be nice when we wake up.
because we are anxious about something in real life
Dont eat dairy products before bed they give you nightmares!
Could be visions of the future?

To make waking up to our sad mundane lives seem like a blessing!!
Oh and to sort out recent events and feelings in a place where you are safe and no real conciquences occur, etc... etc... zzzzzzzzzzz
Horrible things you think about seep into your dreams. For instance I'm being bullyed by a few people and I have a reacureing dream of two of them rapeing me, always the same two but in a diffrent place every time- it's freaking me out a bit!
