How is poverty defined and measured in USA and UK?
In India, poverty line is defined in terms of access to adequate food grains. I believe that USA and Uk must have more liberal norms of poverty.

In Uk poverty markers are used to define relative poverty - can a person afford to buy a washing machine, or a cooker ie can they furnish a house. Can they clothe and feed their children. The Uk has a much more compassionate approach than the US which seems to blame the individual for their financial state. Ultimately by providing some financial assistance to low income or unemployed families, they are able to meet basic food and shelter needs and spending money that is going back into the economy. This is a better solution than giving nothing forcing people into crime to survive. Compared to developing countries no-one in UK which has a welfar system is poor, but in relation to the average wage then many are in poverty and thus marginalised. Children who grow up in poverty experience social exclusion, and many of the current initiative to alleviate child poverty are aimed at increasing the availability of free education whether it be adult literacy or university courses (which are free in scotland). Having a low income is soul destroying as often the hours worked are long and physically demanding. Tax credits are aimed at helping bridge the gaps, but as we all know have been fraught with problems esp overpayments recouped in too large a sum to enable the family to have enough to live on.
The only way out of poverty is work, and jobs that pay well require an education. If education is freely available along with assistance for living expenses and childcare, then more and more people will be free of the poverty trap.
