The English: tolerant people?

I'm not English, but I look like one, sound like one and live like one. It seems to me that the English think they are very tolerant people, but from experience, they are quite the reverse and only really tolerate you if you "fit in"..completely... what's your experience?

Well, I can tell you the English certainly have better teeth than those up and over the border - (fried mars bars i hear). Having said that the English do consume a third of the worlds boiled sweets (we tooth fairies know these things), so I guess they must be rather good at brushing. Those English folk I have met generally think I'm rather pretty and merely a figment of their imagination. I don't suppose I'd ever fit in with them, even if I wanted to. I do think the English are rather quaint though and I simply adore your rose gardens and Earl Grey. xx
I think we are over tolerant..look at the state of our country..
some are, some ain't, just like any nation.
They are very good at tolerating as well as excluding people and they do it very politely
I agree that there's a lot of gits round here who take that attitude, but if I find that a person or group have a nice enough attitude, I'll be a culture chameleon to fit in with their mind set. Enough posh people have got on well with me despite my punkiness.
I think we are intolerant of the wrong things, but hugely overtolerant of stuff we really ought not to be.
Well Im not English either but why should the people of a country have to change the way they live their lives and have their views ignored just to make everyone feel welcome when the incomers make no attempt to intermingle.
Some are, some are not.
I'm not English either- I'm Scottish. So I don't sound English and I don't know how you can look English but I do know that you shouldn't say a whole nationality have the same personality.( I know this because Scots have a reputation for being mean). It's true that they will probably have similar values and beliefs but I'm sure some English people are more 'tolerant' than other Englanders. Everyone has their own individual personality. It isn't true that everyone acts as a race.
you know what since i've been on this site i have witnessed some of the most shocking right wing and racist attitudes i have ever known. Its true what psychologists say - when you're identity is hidden (avatars and user names) u can get really nasty and expose things u never would otherwise.

having said that -every time i am almost driven to despair about what is going on on this society (which depends upon people from other cultures - NHS, restarants, cleaners etc etc etc) from the hateful comments i read; i come across a vast swathe of sensible and decent comments from decent folk who often feel the need to qualify their opinions with 'I am not Muslim/Asian/Black etc.etc).

THANK GOODNESS for the kindness of such pple who do not let others get away with it - bcos if they didnt argue against the vitriol being spouted then the questioner would think that their attitudes were okay and shared by others.

What ever !
I'm English.

We English used to think we were tolerant, but at the moment many English people are very touchy and quite aware of the fact. There are various reasons, but one is that many English people feel at the moment that their tolerance has been taken advantage of. We do believe in equality, in fairness and in human rights, for us too.
Not all . BUT some are .. also the ppl from all over the woRLD
You cant generalise. Some are tolerant and some arent. Like everyone else in the world
I think most English are generally tolerant (although what it is about someone's non-Englishness that I have to 'tolerate', I'm not sure.)

This might however be a politeness thing!

As someone has already pointed out, the anonymity of YA allows people to post extreme, nasty, vicious opinions without having to justfy or account for them. So it's a haven for the bigotted coward. But these idiots are, thankfully, a minority.
I'm English and why the f**k should i be tolerant when all you foreigners keep coming over here and ruining our country. England was a great place to live ten years ago and now i want out! pi55 0ff home if you don't like the way your treated
english people on there own are generally nice people but newspapers like the sun which is the highest selling paper in the country gets the them all worked up over stupid **** and they seem to follow like sheep. It stirs up **** like before a major football tournement it will run features on how hard the polish fans are and things like that to get the idiots here all riled up then reports what a disgrace the english are.
So to some up English people are'nt any more intorelant than anyone else but there press is very intorelant no matter how much they say otherwise.
I think we`re very tolerant. It`s only when people want to have their cake and eat it we object. No one has to fit in completely, however I don`t like to see a person flouting our way of life, then promoting their own religion or culture, and claiming that THEIR way is better. Anyway, just how tolerant are other nationals in their own country with aliens/immigrants or other religion/cultures? More tolerant than us? I don`t think so.
I would say you English are "tolerant".you legalized gay marriage!
I am English, and I think (generally) that we are very tolerant.
Obviously, that does not mean that they can not be intolerant,
sometimes - nobody's perfect, and no nationality is perfect
either (yes, that includes Americans lol )
racist you? Never!

Your being just as bad as those you condemn!
I have never fitted in anywhere or felt the need to.If you are not English but you are living in England you are being tolerated on some level. England is one of the greatest countries in the world to live in, ask anyone who's English.
We can't be that intolerant. After centuries of building an empire, we were asked to leave by the majority of the people within that empire. After much upheaval and lots of discord we gave up our empire, only to find that when we returned to these shores, that most of the empire wanted to follow us.
Odd question. Depends where you live. Which road you live in. Which school you go too. Do you have a job/friends?
Are you happy with your family?
Perhaps its YOU that just feels that everyone is against you? (why?)
I'm English and tolerant of anyone /any race who cares how their actions affect those around them.
Naturally I also attempt to live by the same rule myself .
Those who don't can set sail in a hanging basket as far as I am concerned.
Thank you , please, kindly.regards, all the best.
A gent
I'm not tolerant at all (I am British, not some wierd person who just answers all they can) I mean I'm tolerant in conversation and with children or daft people and that and people seem to think that I'm a lovely patient person, but honestly I get so wound up! I just don't want to seem rude so I go home and scrub something.
