Should we do away with names and just have numbers?
When we see or hear a name then we tend to come to a certain conclusion eg male or female, black or white or whatever. If we had just a number(perhaps with a few letters to avoid very long numbers and any ageism - low numbers are older?) this would rid us of any predudice. Most countries already have some sort of numbering eg N.I. insurance, social security etc.

ye thats a great idea we should dye everyones skin the same colour and shave everyones heads aswell. better yet make evryone the same sex for those people prejudice against the opposite sex my mate keith doesnt trust people with bigger hands than him so we'll have to make sure everyones hand are smaller than keiths.
I am kidding of course but what i am trying to say is you need to address the issue of prejudice and not try and neutralize an area of prejudice. Instead of changing our names how about changing our perceptions of others different from us and killing the beast at its source?
yeah, thats in the Bible. We get a number tattooed on our foreheads. We then are nobody. No personality. It is a dangerous place you want to go.
No - I do not think we should go anywhere near a system like this - it doesn't allow for people's personalities.
We should by all means have unique numbers to identify ourselves like NI numbers etc . but we should still keep our names.
I struggle to remember names sometimes!
no but could have both like what they do in the army
Yes we should, but then it will be more complicated as all the numbers may be mixed up after a while.
we would only be just a number...at work we are just numbers but in life i want to be a PERSON
As long as I can be No.1 then I don't care.
They did that in the prisoner of war camps to de humanise people as much as anything.
Although I think we should all have an id card with our own number, on computer, that might help.
ok you may now refer to me as 'mr 1337'
No way! How horrid and impersonal. Yes we might stereotype sometimes with names, but they are also a big part of our identity - it doesn't need to be a bad thing that our name gives signs of our age, or our parents culture, etc. And we can have an NI number for example, which we use, but we need our own name as well!
Can you imagine yelling your friend who you've just seen down the street - "Oi - 0045216985296"? Doesn't work quite as well as "Pete" does it?!
I think we would have to cease all contact with the outside world for that to work !
No - I'm numerically dyslexic - I'd get confused about who people were! It's bad enough trying to read road signs.
ooo ooo can I have 36498 before someone else gets it?
or
erm...
NO.
I'll stick with my name thanks.
No way, ours names are part of our personalities. It's partly what makes us who we are!
"I am not a number, I'm a free man" The Prisoner aka No.6
Over time people would change their numbers, and certain digits would have particular meanings. So it would be quite pointless. However if it stopped women believing that they had to change their names on marriage it would be a good idea.
No! In my lifespan of 69 years I had a number one - at boarding school in Scotland. I know that I am the only person who knows
that 852 was or is Iain Ritchie (True name). Imagine Tony Blair
being 12345AZ. No personality, no importance, nothing. But he is
Prime Minister, which would give him a name. If not for personal
reasons, but for journalistic reasons so you (the asker) should
know right from wrong. Elections would be impossible with numbers.
Debates also. So, please let us stay with our names. History tells us
that names are important.
if you are not a civil servant you should be!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ladies, anyone found 27 a particuarly 'difficult' age to be?
does anyone think dreams mean things?
if you could have a special power what would it be?
are you people who answer questions more gobby than the posers?
Do you remember actually being born?
does anyone think that we live in hell and when we die we go some were better?
Why are we offended by comments that have nothing to do with us?
So what do you get for these points then? Some sort of prize?
