I would provide an outline which would describe the methodology to be used to solve the problem and the high level steps to be taken to reach the proper conclusion.
I would also provide references showing how professionals in this particular field attacked similar problems.
You need to convince them that you have a difficult task in front of you but that you have a high level plan to complete it at a pace that you are able to achieve.
You can give an example in another field, like computer science. Many times, a computer scientist will lay out the problem that he needs to solve and write down a solution in a higher level language, or pseudo code. When he receives approval for his high level plan, he can then begin to code at a lower level.
I don't believe that you need any psychological ploys to achieve your objectives. Just be honest. Show them that you have a good comprehension of the problem and know a solution, but you need extra time to complete it.
I think that you are using the whole thing as an excuse, trying to find a phychological argument or illness to back up either your lack of knowledge or your lack of required hard work.
I think that you are trying to find an 'out' based on blaming something other than yourself. this is probably a pattern that will follow you though your life if you get away with it.
Time to face yourself and be yourself. Get on with things or take another direction, but lieing to others and yourself is not the answer
Either way this is not the answer you wanted, but is probably quite close to the truth
