Should a pyschiatrist be religious?

This is just a thought and not meant to be offensive but as a pyschiatrist is meant to understand the complexities of upbringing and the effect that that may have on someones personality and way of life, wouldn't it be hard to understand why a pyschiatrist would believe in a god when he should know it is a product of what household, country etc you are bought up in. Eg really the reason a muslim is a muslim is cos he grows up being told thats is the truth and same with all other religions. Unless of course he has a divine moment where god appears b4 him but even then he should realise, being a pyshiatrist, that the brain can cause hallucinations etc. Do yo understand my point?

Answers:
Yes I do and agree entirely. I would think that complexities of the job of being a psychiatrist would make it almosty impossible for them to follow any sort of creed or religion, especially devoutly as it would almost definately encroach on any advice the psychiatrist would give the patient. Unless of course the psychiatrist only saw people from his or her own faith?
A good psychiatrist can be good at his profession irregardless of religious affiliation. Whether he is of good to you is your decision. You use whatever criteria that are appropriate.
I don't like "shoulds."
Do you mean psychiatrist or psychologist?

A psychiatrist can prescribe medicine. A psychologist cannot.

Either way, let's not forget that "psyche" - the first part of both words - means "soul" and a psychiatrist and psychologist are in the business of figuring out how to treat people on a soul level.

Sounds like a religious vocation to me.
I think you are already hallucinating, why don't you be the first such psychiatrist?
Doubt it makes any difference about his/her personal relgious preference, he / she will be educated, will possess all the knowledge of religion etc therefore he/she will be able to treat a patient without bias and with sympathy, empathy and understanding.
Assuming you really mean 'psychiatrist' rather than 'psychologist', I would have thought it was practically essential for a psychiatrist to be religious. Their job is so disheartening most of the time that a firm belief in something which gave people solace before psychiatry came along must come in very handy.

Psychologists have to believe in religion because they often meet a god in person - he's called a psychiatrist.
