Why do we revere some celebrities? Do we think more of people who entertain us rather than save our lives?
I am genuinely baffled that actors/actressess, singers etc are so revered - to the extent that people will travel miles to be just in the same vicinity as them..
It seems to me daft that we adore for example an actor paid £££'s for pretending to be a doctor yet we may respect our own gp but certainly don't verge on the almost worshiping him or her..
Many celebrities seem to me to be unworthy of such attention yet the phenomenon prevails? Why?
Is it just that technology allows the likes of Brad Pitt to be more familiar to us than people who live next door?

Personally, this awe at Celebs does annoy me.
When it says for example that Celeb A had a bay who is ill, it annoys me how much these people feed on the public. Any other Joe bloggs would tell the media to sod off so they can concentrate on their child but most of these celebs find the limelight more importaint! It is sickening.
No one gives a damn about someone living down the road whose family were killed in a crash and has lost their child while they are dying themselves but should a Celeb be in a mag about their "Depression at gaining a stone" then the country seems to prick their ears up and read about it all and then talk about it!
How on earth these people get an almost God Like Status is beyond me.
People have things happening to them all the time so why is a celeb more inportaint? Simply that people KNOW them. That is the only common ground anyone can find.
We all know Jorden so the topic of her getting married makes conversation (God knows why) While on the other hand, say Jane and Eddie goit married, no one gives a damn.
Personally, I DON'T give a crap about celebs. They are "NORMAL" peope just like the rest of us. The ony difference other than having a high paid job is that more people know them.
I agree. But media plays the biggest role in that.
Perfectly put Smiley. 100% agree.
its total media control, but i do agree with you. I mean they are only human.
its strange, i never really thought about it like that before, but its true.
i dont think ppl realise that these famous ppl are just like us, they just get paid more.
I couldn't agree more.
This world definitely has it's priorities wrong, that's for sure.
media madness the media attatches itself to celebreties and uses them to sell themselves instead of actually producing news.unfortunatly the masses bieng relatively uneducated prefer pap to actual news.this is also the same reason religion gets away with it the masses arent educated they are filled with pap instead
The human brain likes to live in social groups of 150 (give or take a few)
Unfortunately our society has become more individually isolated, there are more of us but our social habits and media habits make us more singular
we fill the void with tabloid gossip
knowing the intimate details of people (even if they aren't true) fills an essential void in a persons psych. This knowledge reinforces their sense of place in their group of 150. Even though 60 of their group they only know about through tabloid, it's 60 people their brain needs to account for
They are just human and yet they represent some unfulfiled dreams for some of us.
Also we spend much more time watching TV instead of talking to neighbours. No wonder they FEEL so familiar
If you are human and breathing, the unattainable is very seductive. We admire people who put themselves "out there" and do the things we just dream about doing. Talent, beauty, personality, wealth, fame is stuff that makes up our dreams and lives in our imaginations.
As far as the roll of the media goes..by the grace of God do I not go where these celebraties roam for I enjoy my privacy and my ananimity!
I totally agree with you - it annoys me when we place value on an actor's opinions! What made Arnold Schwarzenegar decide he had the experience to be a politician? Bizarre!
But then, why is it that the few times I've met celebrities, I find myself babbling?
The media makes sure celebrities are IN YOUR FACE 24/7. It is hard to ignore. But you rarely hear about the people who save lives.
I believe that celebrity as we know it today was formed from a need or desire for escapism.
The advent of television, radio and film gave us access to people living the lives we desired for ourselves at a time of war and or economic depression.
We saw the actors and actresses on the movie screen or the sports stars doing what we would have liked to be doing.
For many I feel that they made these stars icons, images of what they themselves aspired to become and this has permeated down through society to todays absurd situation where a man gets paid £120,000 a week for playing football or a tennis player gets £500,000 for winning a tournament or an actress gets $20,000,000 for making one film.
Once created the celebrity then becomes a cash cow for themselves, promoters, managers and the media. Its all about £'s or $'s,we only have to look at the pre-release publicity a film or album gets or the appearance money a sports star is paid to participate in a particular event to see how the celebrity is used to generate hype and interest and especially money.
So for me celebrities are revered because they are a false escapists ideal and while I think they may have their use in for example being the patron of a charity, they are certainly way over valued as a commodity of use to society in general !
