Does learning how to drive make u more alert?

At first you might be more aware of what is going on around you and on the road. Unfortunately about the time you become a good driver you get lax quit paying attention and usually have your first accident. So stay alert and don't get hurt. and have a really good one:-)
Only after you get in an accident or two due to the fact that you weren't paying attention.
It does while you're learning because the examiners are so finnicky about everything, but then you start to slacken off and pick up bad habits once you've been driving for a bit.

I totally think it does. It is a test of reflexes and awareness.
If you want to be more alert either learn to ride a motorcycle (if your not alert you will be after a week), or go to a good martial arts instructor.
Maybe when you first start off.there are so many small things you have to be aware of (the steps it takes to get the car going, careful driving, how to avoid accidents with those around you, etc). Needing to keep all of these things in mind, it does require a heightened state of alertness.
Though, I've found at least for me, the longer you drive, the more these many steps become second nature.you no longer think of every minor detail required along the way, which leads to less of a need for a heightened state of alertness.and I've definately seen plenty of drivers who seem to be paying no attention to what's going on around them.
So I guess, it temporarily makes you more alert.

I think so, since learning how to drive I've been a much better pedestrian, its easier to judge how to walk around in busy crowds for some reason!
