Why do people give beggers money when they know it will go on drink or drugs?
Answers:
How do you know the money will be spent on drink or drugs. You my friend need to research into homelessness and the reason for it.It is not all about drink and drugs, it is about their life circumstances and possible abuse ,trauma and rejection in their formative years. They are not as privilaged as you and I. Word of advice in a productive sense, "please dont look down on these people, give them all the help you can, you probably have'nt got a clue what they have been through. Whilst we were all tucked up at night, half of these people as children have gone through hell, which the likes of you and me could not even comprehend. Please dont blame them, most of them are victims of circumstances.( In other words innocent kids). Do your good deed,Throw them a pound.
Why do most people go to work? Same result.
not all beggers are druggies and alcoholic
I don't.
If I have food on me they get that instead.
that is the choice in life that they have made, in many cases it is only the alcohol that is going to keep them alive, sometimes though they are buying food, I usually only give money to stree musicians or magicians they are the best!
because they feel they are helping someone less fortunate and at the end of the day they are
because they feel sorry for them and like to think they arent! but if they are (and i dont condone this) isnt it better they are given the money to get drink etc rather than go out and steal it? i know doesnt make it right but kinda puts diff perspective on it
I think its because, there are a few beggers who genuinely need the help, but its impossible to tell who. Some people buy them sandwiches instead. Probably best not to judge people in these situations, we have no idea what these people have run away from. Maybe if you had lived their lives, you might have turned to drink or drugs to eliminate the pain in the only way they know how.
Because that is what I spend my money on! ;-)
I don't give them money, I work- so can they.
Because sometimes we all want to think better of people even if they then let you down!
We also hope that if we were in that persons place someone would help us.
It's a HOPE thing.
It makes them feel like they have helped society.
I dont think that's fair - not everyone on the street is on drink and drugs. Some people have had very unfortunate lives and thats where they have ended up. Lets be honest.our government is hell bent on making sure every immigrant that arrives in the country is housed, fed and watered - they havent got time for us!
Anyway...if you've got a roof over your head and a few spare pennies in your pocket, then do the right thing!
Thats not always the case, we have a few homeless here in Weymouth and yes its true the majority are on drink, drugs or both, BUT there are 2 here 1 female & 1 male that do not drink & do not take drugs, they are what we call traditional street people here in Weymouth and YES a lot of us give them change when we see them, BUT there is one very big difference with them two.THEY NEVER EVER ASK
What else are you gonna do with it? Put it in a savings account until one day you can buy a house? No I didn't think so I am happy to feed their addictions my money well spent.
Because that is what I would spend it on as well!
Guilt.
Giving is the result. You dont know where your moneys going if you mail it off to a charity.so if you're worried what someone is going to do with your gift, don't give.<skinflint>
I never give to beggars, and I have stopped giving to charities on the streets as well. You may think it sound cruel and nasty, but I feel that my own family needs the money more than ever, with my son being in and out of hospital, and my husband a student.
because some people don't think that when they give them money. they just feel sorry for them and give them the money i don't really think they think about what these beggers may go and do with it. It makes them feel better to just give money. Besides do all beggers go and drink and do drugs?
There was a begger in Middlesbrough Uk who was arrested on drugs charges and he went to court.
It was found he earned in excess of £15,000 a year!
I work with homeless males and used to think this..then when I got into this line of work my views changed...
Most hostels YMCA etc charge for one night stayers..14pound per night, so the lads need money for this....don't tar all of these people with the same brush and i think that if I had been through half of what some of these men have suffered I'd drink too.
Lets hope you never fall on hard times mate....never say never!
What difference will it make?
If the homeless person didn't, then the guy giving the money probs would.
Some will save it. Ive read of street beggars in Seattle and Im sure other large cities collecting 100,000$ annually
Good point! I recently offered a sealed pasty instead - and it was rejected!
I have a feeling that when you give a begger a few bob, he hates your guts!
Because I am in a fortunate posistion where I can afford to do this x
Not all people are drunken druggy scabs you know..Its hard to tell the difference but I think we are intelligent enough to decide on who is the most desrving cause x
Its charity. For our heart to get happiness.

If you needed money urgently, would you want others judging your reason for needing? Be charitable one day it could be you.
I think people hand them a little money because it is the easiest way to feel like they have helped them, for the least amount of inconvenience to themselves.
If you really want to help some of them, offer to give them some clothing, or buy them a meal from McDonald's, most homeless will never take you up on this. If not, then of course, they are looking to get drunk and high. Giving most of these unfortunate people money DOES NOT help them, rather it keeps them where they're at.
As Bill Hicks once said, "Hell, that's what I was going to spend it on, who am I to judge!"
