Why do other people yawn when they see you yawn?
Answers:
i forgot medical name for it, but it is our brain that takes activates such things, for example when someone smiles to you, you smile back, when you see man drinking water or Coke, you think about buing coke, when you see kiss, you want kiss,
the thing is that our surroundings infulence on our behaviour and thoughts,
if there is some little need of something in your brain, and you will see it, the need becomes bigger and in some moment it has to come to action, as thought always wants to be put to action,
if you got to some romantic movie you might need of dating somebody, but if you see movie of action , the first thing you leave cinema is kicking trash-can.
other thing subcouncious, if some though appears in our subcouncious it can get to our brain, and while mind stimulates brain , our brain stimulates body to action, the thing is that subcouncious you can think about yawning and in effect your brain find this though and find it easy to realize so you yawn, and your wish has been produced.
that is why Mettalica sings "be careful what you wish" "you might get it"
i had similar problem when somone coughed, i always had to be the one who coughed as last one, but some day i have realized that this is just need of my brain, and sometimes its been coded in to cough everytime somone coughs. so i forced myself not to, and now i can control most of my thoughs.
but most of people does not control such things, so this is what happends.
other explanation is that we are very social animals, what means that we dont like feel alinated , so we are automtically doing what other does, our brain just will try to assimilate us to surrounding us people, so we wouldnt be outstanding as
i dont know why but the biggest fear of most people is to be "diffrent" than other. so does our brain.
Cuz you're boring them!
Ha Ha! I've always wondered that. It seems to be contagious. Even the thought of it is making me yawn now....just going to put my head ..down.. for ..a..zzzzzzzzzzzzz
i don't know, but i read your question and yawned when i read the word yawn..hmmm
Copycats
It's contagious. Supposedly. There have been many tests and even featured on Mythbusters and it's pretty much either comfirmed nor denied. But I think it is.
This is an age-old question, but sorry, I don't have the answer.
If they have nothing to yawn ,the ignore you,and keep there self busy with there own things.
I do that all the time dunno why, but i like to say it congatious
Its called mirroring:
mirroring (psychology) imitating someone with which there is the purpose of acquiring empathy.
exactly as smokers want to smoke when you do, or when you eat a candy and those others who like that candy wanna eat one too.
-Pleasure-
Yawning makes you feel good, feel a little more renewed, it gives you pleasure, like a little orgasm. And we can say that is the most "shared at same time" orgasm :p
Dang. just reading your question made me yawn. (^.-)
Thousands of years ago when were living in caves and mud huts, doing things together was crucial for survival. It gave people a sense of belonging to a group, unlike today when the individual is king, and we each do what we want individually.
Yawning is the sign that we should be getting ready to go to sleep. When one person yawned around the fire, so would somebody else, then somebody else and soon the whole group/community would know its time to go to sleep.
It's a social sign to others of our immediate intention, ie to go to sleep, and if we all went to sleep together that sense of community and belonging was made stronger.
hehehe! its unconscious tuning. like we tend to follow someone's else posture. Like to synchronize :-)
Its actually classed as a disease
In fact the most contagious disease in the world,
Also yawning doe`s not mean you are tired,Its due to lack of OXYGEN to the brain,
The brain is telling you to draw in more oxygen.
Due to this when you see someone else yawn YOUR brain
subconsciously thinks you are taking oxygen from it so then you as others do YAWN too.

I think it related to empathy. Mirroring or copying happens we want to engage the other person and can apply to laughing, body posture etc.
no idea but i have an autistic daughter who has sleep problems
ioften have to stay in her room till she goes to sleep or she doesnt sleep til really late (even with her meds)
i used to lie on the bed next to her pretending to yawn top get her to yawn and feel tired there were times when this actually helped her go to sleep
it is also something to try if you are stuck in a boring meeting try yawning and see how many others start to yawn

Yawning, like stretching, increases blood pressure and heart rate while also flexing many muscles and joints. It is also theorized that yawning helps redistribute an oil-like substance which coats the lungs and aids breathing. Some have observed that if you try to stifle or prevent a yawn by clenching your jaws shut, the yawn is unsatisfying. As such, the stretching of jaw and face muscles seems to be necessary for a good yawn.
The yawn reflex is often described as contagious: if one person yawns, this will cause another person to "sympathetically" yawn. The reasons for this are unclear; however, recent research suggests that yawning might be a herd instinct.
Anyway, nuff said... I'm off to bed now.. yawn, yawn, yawn!
we are all so damn tired?
probably for the same reason that if someone was talking about nits or fleas you'd start scratching
