Why do people of different races and ethnic groups prefer to mingle amongst themselves?

I live in Canada and usually most people that are black, brown white or whatever, prefer to hang out with people of the same race. Even those that are from the same country or ethnic background do the same. Is there any particular reason for this?

Answers:
It's a confort zone. People feel they have more in common with people of the same race, for cultural background reason, or whatever else links them.
you should come to London for the day.. and see how mixed up we are over here. you would get a shock.lol
Hmmm.
well in england do they ok
maybe canada is a racist country i dont know?
maybe they think the same as white canadians
that's not true
i'm english and i live and go to college in a small village in the middle of England, and oneof my closest friends is italian.
we all hang out in one big group.
it's very multicultural in england anyway.
birds of a feather flock together
Most people are afraid of what they don't know and tend to avoid it. It's a natural reaction born of ignorance.
This is because every single person in the world has a "racist" gene - which makes us feel more comfortable with people similar to ourselves and less comfortable with people who are different - the more different they are the more uncomfortable we feel. This can also be said of social class - you feel more comforbable with people of similar class and less so with those above or below you.
I think it's because you feel better related to that person and if your talking about something from your home country or your culture they might understand you better than someone of a different ethnic background or you might be able to talk to them in the language you use to speak in your home country there are many reasons why a person might do this religion might be one in whatever religion you belong to they usually tell you you should have friends within the religion and that you should get married with someone of the same religion.
sometimes it is a question of religion and they are not allowed to mix
we have the same thing. many people migrate for financial reasons rather than any desire to live in a particular country.
some people have cultural prejudice against caucasians. given the chance they would carve out an exclusive territory for their own kind.
Because of ignorance? These are the people who probably like to play the "racist" card yet by segregating themselves from other groups they are in fact the racists!
Why do think, "Birds of same feature flock together"
In England we don't seem to have that problem. I'm mixed black/white, my mates are white, italian, pakistani, indian, west indian, jamican, chinese, spanish, turkish, and phillipino.
Birds of a feather
because that is who they are comfortable with. not saying that is OK. personally i believe that we limit ourselves when we don't take the chance to know other cultures, people and races.
Comfort. I think we have a tendency to believe that our values and way of life would be similar; we would be able to relate to one another more easily without being offended or offended. We tend to think they would understand the way we feel because they exposed to similar factors and probably background.

I find its not always true though. Some of my lot are just not forward thinking, adventurous or curious as I would like them to be so relating is somewhat weird and awkward.
It's easier, isn't it? We like what is familiar.
because our parents taught us not to talk to strangers
Tribal instinct
its the go of nature to flourish as per the theory of evolution through natural selection
because if they lived in some of the predominately white areas we have they would be subjected to racial attacks. there is strength in numbers and anyway ethnic people are not daft why live somewhere were it is obvious people dont want to know you
