In the UK, how long can you be held without charge after being arrested?

Thanks!

Answers:
By the Police 72 hours. What is sadder is that the Customs office can hold you indefinately so long as they can show probable suspicion or just cause.

So lets see - 72 hours for questioning on the suspicion of shooting or raping someone. Indefinately if you tried to defraud, deface, or steal government/crown money. You can see where this country's priorities lie can't you!
48-72 Hours unless it is for terrorism then you can be held for upto 6 weeks
24-36 hours then the police have to apply for an extension from the courts
is there something you want to tell us?
48 hours i believe, and then the police have to apply for longer custody
So far as I know a person can be detained without charge for 6 hours. After this, you are either released, or arrested and charged, meaning you can be detained until a court appearance which will take place on the first lawful day after arrest (this could be all weekend if you are arrested on a Friday).
I noticed a few of the other answers said you could be detained the equivalent of a few days but I believe they are presuming that these people have been arrested and charged.
On another note, I am in Scotland and so it is very possible that our detention/arrest laws are different to English, Irish or Welsh.
In Scotland for sure it's 6 hours without charge, then until the next lawful court day for arrest and charge.
All the best.
24hrs
