Why can't i get a job? been unemployed for sixteen years, now 37 - have plenty of quals and experience?

Answers:
Don't rely too much on your qualifications. I've known too many people who leave university and end up doing the same jobs as my friends who have no qualifications. All they do is show you are rather good at remembering things.

Experience is what they look more for. You've been out of work for a long time though, maybe they feel you're skills aren't up to date. Maybe you should think about enrolling on some courses to refresh your knowledge on things and bring you bang up to date with what's happening in the job market now.

Be willing to start at the bottom.. show lots of enthusiasm, and always be prepared to learn new things. This is what gets you noticed in the end. If employers seem nervous about taking you on because of your qualifications - it may be because they surpass their own. Just play them down a little, don't go into too much detail about them unless specifically asked.

Most importantly don't give up - there is a job out there for you somewhere. Good luck. :-)
maybe you have too many quals.
appy for a job
Because you're not looking?

If you have not been working for 16 years then you no longer have any qualitifications.

Good Luck,
I guess you might have too much self esteem.
there is absolutely no reason to be unemployed for so long go work at mcdonalds or something
You need to move, the job market is most likely not very good in your area.
Or you need to improve your interviewing skills.
b/c you have no work history! They really look down on that!
did you get off your butt and try applying for one?
you cant get a job cuz your a lazy slob that wont get your a55 off the couch and go fill out applications u may not get your dream job but any m1 that wants a job can get 1
Is this Ted Kozinski?
probably because you have been unemployed for 16 years and you think you should get a great job right out of the gate. Go for more of an entry level position for awhile.
If you're actively looking, maybe you don't interview well. Look online for some tips.
sounds like you are picky or just plain bad at interviewing
mabey your expecting too high of a job? or arent as qualified as u think..16 years? where u in the can? selling drugs? welly?
that's just the system for you unfortunately.
Go and work in a slaughter house - not many people want a job in a factory setting thats why there are so many immigrants coming in - go work in a factory - besides they get paid as much as person with a PhD now that minimum wage is out of control.
Um, if you've been unemployed for 16 years and you're only 37, how is it that you have plenty of experience? Just curious. If you've been unemployed for 16 years (which is an immediate black mark on an employment application), it means you haven't worked since you were 21. If you started working at 17 years of age, that's only four years of experience. You've been unemployed four times as long as your work history. That's the problem right there.
How can you have experience if you've been unemployed for 16 years?
Bullshitter.
What are you doing for money? Have you been a student all your life? Maybe your qualifications do not make up for what you lack...experience, personality? who knows?
Daaaaam!! and I felt like crap when I wus unemployed for 4 months a few years ago
You've been unemployed too long. They're wanting to know why, I want to know why. You've been at home doing what, all this time? How much experience could you have being unemployed for so long?
You may have gotten used to not do anything and stopped looking for a real job. Try not to be so picky, you wont find the best job out there that meet your quals after being over 15 years out of work. you need to start from point one.
idiot why dont you try fill out a application form

unless your just full of bull
I would say your age. They only want 16 years nowadays cause its cheap labour and dont have the guilt of laying them off at any time because most 16 year olds dont have commitments like a more mature adult.
you are just not looking very hard , or you just don't want a job , i'll bet you live with your parents don't you? what are you going too do when they are gone , ? bet you will get ont then ,
how you got experience if you been unemployed for 16 years?
Get a job that dont ask for references as such then get a better one.
Its easier to find a job when you already have one.
Get motivated and apply for anything!
maybe u are over quailfied and maybe u are looking in the wrong avenue go volunteer some where
Unemployed for 16 years? How can you have plenty of qualifications and experience if you've been unemployed for 16 years? Did you volunteer a lot? Do you have a criminal history? Do you have an education?

If you have a criminal history, that could be the problem. I know a person who could not find a job for a very long time because he was a convicted felon.

Good luck in your search.
How can you have loads of experience if you have been out of work for the last 16 years that means you have only worked 5 years of your life MAX unless you have been working on the hush hush. There is always vacancies for Bus Drivers. Try looking harder.
Well, Tony Blair is leaving shortly - now is your chance - u muppet!!
Do you live with your parents? How do you survive? Go work at a wal-mart or target. You probably just don't have ambition. I wouldn't either if I didn't work for 16 years. Wow thats just almost as long as I have been alive. LOL
