How important does a person have to be to be assassinated, not murdered?

Not that I'm planning anything..just whats the difference?

Answers:
Assassination means murdered for political (rather than emotional, financial or accidental reasons).
So to be "assassinated," someone only has to have a job that entails a function that someone deems to be pivotal in the political process.
So, a voter registrar in a rural community (surely a "nobody" in the grand scheme of things) can be "assassinated" if he is killed to sway the results of an election. But a president can be "murdered" if he is killed by a jealous husband for non-political reasons.
Got it?
Good.
interesting question. I think they save the 'big/fancy' word assination for presidents and high leaders. Or if it looked like it was a planned stalking for a celebrity.
None, the intended victim id DEAD either way. He isn't any less dead assasinated, or murdered.Semantics means very little, dead is dead.
I think they have to be in a position of power/influence.
They must be a widely popular figure, whether they're a politician, movie star, athlete or a musician.
as·sas·si·nate ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-ss-nt)
tr.v. as·sas·si·nat·ed, as·sas·si·nat·ing, as·sas·si·nates
To murder (a prominent person) by surprise attack, as for political reasons.
To destroy or injure treacherously: assassinate a rival's character.
oh good question!

i think assassination is more organized with a political purpose.

but im just guessing. :\
It's just how much you want to have someone removed. Organizations more likely gov'ts are more the type to have assassinations carried out. US doesn't sanction them so they don't do it. Some other still do.

If you hate Joe Bloe and kill him thats murder. If you are the Generalissimo of Patanuco and Joe Bloe is speaking out against your regime and you have him killed thats assassination.
Grendle's answer explains it very well!
I think an assassination is PLANNED, usually by a group of people. A hit man does the job. The victim is chosen specifically based on an existing relationship rather than a more random reason, as in the case of a burglary victim who is murdered when he tries to stop the robbery.

Then when you add execution to the mix, that speaks to the method, i.e. lined up and shot or a single shot to the back of the head as opposed to a sniper shot
Good question, but to me if they are shot in cold blood its murder.
Hmmmn I think they have to be a politician or someone who is standing for something political. A celebrity e.g. Britney Spears would not be assasinated as much as murdered. Assasination is eliminating someone for a very specific purpose - to destroy them before they destroy you, or else impose on your lifestyle methinks.
Anyone that has the power to over turn the government.
