Why do most Americans think they live in the best country in the world?

I don't think it is really so. From what we see people are prejudiced, racist, segregationist, materalistic, shallow and narrow- minded. Do you agree?

Answers:
I think the reason most Americans think that is that most Americans haven't seen most of America. Don't get me wrong, its a great place to visit and can have a lot to offer as a holiday destination. From my experience the best parts of the States are all natural and have nothing to do with the people who live there. Its such a large place that it of course has pockets of good but if you compare the land mass with that of Europe. Well, I think Europe has a lot more to offer.

It is meant to be a land of opportunities but sadly those opportunities really only apply to a minority. There is so much poverty there it actually reminded me of parts of Africa I had visited. These things are swept under the carpet and not really talked about. I think when Hurricane Katrina hit one of these parts, and the people who lived on the bread line were on national news, a vast majority of America were genuinely shocked that this was their country.

Also Americans wont see themselves or their country from an outside perspective as they are too close to it all. Its a bit like not seeing how bad your own child is because its your child you can forgive anything. The rest of the world sees the bad all too clearly!

It really isn't the best country in the world. I live in England and I don't think that is the best country in the world either. There are a lot of countries that have it more sorted than both of them but they don't advertise it and that way they can keep it great. Living in Germany for a year was a real eye opener!

And I do agree that the things you listed are more prevalent in the USA than in the UK but it is still a gross generalisation and not true of everyone. Sadly it is true of a lot of the people that run the country.

Good question though. quite thought provoking!

Thanks.
i do :)
We'll americans have made a whole lot of crap and have the greatest military in the world so i think it's safe to say that their country rocks
I agree, and wouldn't want to live any where else thats for sure
I don't think it's racist or segregationalist because that was 50 years ago.

However, America provides a plethora of opportunities for people to get ahead in life.
im english and i do think it best counrty in world!!!

there lot of good places in world but none better then the usa!!!

love it!!!
Yeah, that is the case. I know America isn't perfect. But no country is and ever will be. And we are a heck a lot better off then living in some other countries
The American system is still the best system in the world and I think you are making a blanket statement, most Americans aren't prejudice, etc. Most Americans are very generous souls and we have done a lot to help other countries!
12 million illegal aliens can't be wrong.
It is a wonderful country, shame about the people in it. But then I would say that about any country in the world.
Because they are dumb, how do you explain why a president takes his country to war just after they lost one in Vietnam in similar curcumstances, he's dumb and can't see past the end of his nose.
Ethnocentrism. It is normal for people to think the country they live in is the best in the world. Humans in general are prejudiced, racist, etc. - Americans don't have a corner on that market. it is a problem with humanity, not just Americans.
yes i do agree especially white americans they think they are first people in america but they were'nt it was the native americans thats why they are called native and the americans are so self-obsessed with thereselves look at all the plastic surgery they have over there they also are very fake people and culturally ignorant.
I live in California myself, and my opinions American think they are more so the speak "superior" because they have the most larget military or economic and for one they will brag about ww 2 which I don't blame! however most american sound as prejudice, racist etc because most and I mean mostly young american never travel our of their own town or out of country to see diffrent point of view. However if you meet with american not the "country" or narrow minded non educated people they are prety fair, but hey thats my opinion. But who don't want to live in American anyways? regardless..
I don't think your opinion of Americans holds true for the entire population. And anyway, you can find prejudiced, racist, etc people in any country.

I do think people should be proud of wherever they are from. People should love their country and be patriotic. I don't think those things make you shallow, materialistic, etc.
Because it is. Why do people flock to the US? I don't know where you got the idea that people are prejudiced, racist, etc. You should have witnessed the country after 9/11. We may not be perfect but you're free to be that here too. I'm not saying there aren't other good places to live but you're views are incorrect, shallow and narrow-minded.
Yes, but that's true everywhere. America sucks but it's still got more freedom than any other place in the world. I may not have lived everywhere but I did live in the Philippines, and Okinawa. America is responsible for almost every new technology ever conceived in modern times, the richest man on Earth, the most powerful army, the best food, movies, and a culture that gets exported and copied everywhere. Hey, we invented the Internet, 'nuff said.
I would never live anywhere else.
because they dont put up with the **** we do in england here were being segragated by the government, unfortunatley you have to have some of these qualitys ( i couldt think of another word to get my point across) to survive, its a sorry state of affairs but how it has to be. id like to live along side my neighbours whatever their creed colour or religion but it dosent always work out like that.
Its cause if you live in a country you're probably going to love it.
IGNORANCE AND MEDIA BRAINWASHING.
We don't have a perfect country, but we are a meld of many different cultures, colors, religions, and political beliefs. We have the freedom to voice and practice what we believe in without serious consequences. We have the personal opportunity to rise to the top or sink to the bottom. Many of our destinies are a matter of choice. The key is to choose well and to do so in ways that also benefit others. One difficulty is in uniting our vision since the country is so large.
Having worked with American people in Europe, I found them to be generally likable - if somewhat narrow minded. I believe for example that only a comparatively small number of Americans hold passports - seemingly they do not wish to experience the joys of travel to other countries and thus miss out on the enriching effect that travel can have.

Steve
No, I do not agree. America is the best country in the world.
I think because most of them have never lived anywhere else. How many Americans have a passport?
Having said that I guess that most nationalities could be similarly charged.
America is ok, nice country and all.

It's just the Americans themselves, they are ignorant, arrogant, big headed, know it all, egomaniacs, and think they are better than any one else.

Except the golfers.

RYDER CUP
Most Americans are spoiled rotten. They get just about everything they want and most don't know or care what's going on in the rest of the world.
Because they do? America is the wealthest and most free in the world. Which means we are all free to be prejudiced, racist, segragationist, materialist, shallow and narrow-minded as we wish. We also can be as generious, open minded, intellectual, spritual and expansive as we wish.
In a truly free society you have to accept it all, not just what you think it should be.
Kind of sucks doesn't it?
Why shouldn't they. I think England is the best country in the world, rightly or wrongly. Patriotism is a good thing.
I haven't met many Americans, but those that I have met have been just like anyone else. Some are nice, some are nasty and some, to use an Americanism, are just jerks!
So no. I don't agree.
As i said earlier, the basic problem is that Americans are thick as poop and incredibly inward looking, they have no heritage to speak of and and such disregard everyone elses as having no merit. Typical example of the American mentality - were crap at sports..hmm i know we'll play a game of rounders, dont invite anyone else to play and call it a world series - hell we'll be world champions. I've spent time there, the more i go there the more i realise how incredibly stupid the general population is, and as for that moron Bush....
America is a great country because it provides oppertunities for many people without jobs. I am not saying it's the best one out there, but its a good one.
Its because they are told it is. The whole idea of the American dream is just that a dream that is sold to misguided people telling them that if they are not great or a success its because they are losers. The interesting thing is that the American press is at number 44 in the world in the current press freedom index, which of course helps make America the best country in the world .
