stops the back of your neck getting sunburnt but then u do end up with a sunburnt round patch on ya forehead where the cap fastener is!!!!!

I always thought it was a fashion thing. Trying to be different that just ends up another uniform though wikipedia attributes it to catchers in US baseball.
