How do you define a city?
We're not sure if it's a place that has a cathedral, or a university or some other criterion?
Answers:
In the UK a city has to either have a cathedral or it's granted city status by Royal Charter. London has 2 cities - the City of London (St Paul's Cathedral, and only about 1 sq mile in size) and the City of Westminster (Westminster Abbey). I seem to recall there was a lot of debating in the 1980's about which town should be "upgraded" to city status. In the US it is incorporated and can be any size - I lived in a "city" of only 3,500 in Florida!
Well, I know NEW YORK CITY has those you mentioned for sure. I used to live there when i grew up.
My definition: Cluttered, Stressful, stinky, too many people, too much violence, kidnapping, rape in bigger cities, not a place to raise kids, Dented parked cars on the street, stolen items for parking your car in a parking garage, Graffiti, pornography and prostitution, drug dealer's main office is the city, public peeing on the streets, people asking for money, etc..
Positive Definition if you have money:
Theater, movies, plays, museums, Opera, Ballet, the Zoo, most cities have parks, eating out at many different places, taking a taxi or limo sine, meeting famous celebrities, etc..
In the UK at least, a city has to have a cathedral. But I don't know how you would define a city in a country that doesn't have cathedrals. Surely it would be better to do it by the population size.
Here in America (USA) a city is one that has incorporated as a city (as opposed to a village or town or county.) New York City has five boroughs--Manhattan, or Kings Co., Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island--each with their own separate government to some degree. Cities can vary in population, some citites can be rather small--maybe a population of only 15,000.
For the history of the city and the rise of the city in European and world history, start with an encyclopedia and then more specialized books and sources.
(The city I live in has a population of about 60,000 and was incorporated in 1798.)
Hello! again.
