How would the world be if the average working day was four hours instead of eight?

All of our modern inventions/technology were supposed to make our life easier and make us work less. Yet we work harder, longer, for less money, and as a population are unhappier than ever in history.

I like this question. Funny.. me and my friend at work have talked about this question at work many times. The pay rate would have to be raised though to make up the difference in paychecks.. but i honestly think people would be less stressed out. I would be more willing to show up for work everyday if I only had to work 4 hours per day. There would be different shifts people could choose from, and people would get more things done in a day than they do now. I would love it
people would moan and wish they could work a 2 hour day instead

I think most people would probably get the same amount of work done if they knew they only had to work 4 hours! Less time chatting around the office, but more time to have fun after work. I think the world would be a happier, better place.
One of two things:
1. We would be very unproductive.
or
2. Employers would drive us mercilessly to keep production at a level that would be profitable.
noone would be walking around with bags under their eyes.
france has a 6 hour work day & a lot more vacation time than the rest of the world

This will be the way it is in the future. We will work less hours, jobs will be shared, computers and arising population will mean there are less jobs to go around. Also we are living longer healthier lives therefore peoples retirement is later, will work into old age but for less hours each day.

a lot less bloody tiring..i work a twelve hour day...4 days a week..continental shift pattern..by the time i get up ,1.5 hrs before work,then my twelve hours then another 30 mins driving home.30 mins to have a cuppa/ dump/,shower/shave/shampoo and then another 45mins for my main meal,..see my little lad..off to bed,relax /chat...its 1030pm.. time for bed said zebedee..head hits pillow at 1100pm.up at 0530 to start again.so im knackered.by day 3..
Bored? NO WAY! It would be brilliant. There are so many far far far more interesting/fun/nice/enlighten. things to do than work.
In my younger years I was on benefits for a couple of years, it was bloody wonderful having my rent paid, and getting pocket money to live on; have a couple of times had a year off work and lived on savings - marvellous! Really really nice, until the magic cash machine runs out and you have to go and get a job again!
we didn't get bored, there is so much stuff to keep occupied with - not least the whole "looking out of the window at the rain/birds/wind in the trees" kind of appreciation of nature and contemplation that is really hard to shoe-horn into your life when you are on a 40 hour week.
I'd go for that if i was still getting the same money for working 4 hours as i do for 8

I'd still take an hour and a half for lunch, arrive 30 mins late and leave an hour early!! Not forgetting to give myself time to chaeck my emails and drink coffee!

If the wage was the same we would be poor. If the annual income was the same, I dont know.
It could be more hectic, if you think about the other jobs and when you are not working the others are.
THE WORLD WILL BE BETTER! BECAUSE THERE WILL BE ADJUSTMENT.
