I used to shop a lot when I'm feeling down.Could anyone explain to me why am I doing it?

The answer is actually a little more complicated than you think. Let me explain.

You see, the reason why people feel depressed is due to the increased level of stress hormones being produced in your body when you are under stress. The resultant increase in cortisol levels(the name of the stress hormone) causes an unbalanced state. In plain english - your body is out of whack. Now, what happens next is interesting, read on.

Obviously your body cannot stay in this unbalanced state for very long. Your body won't allow itself to go nuts, oh no. It has a built-in mechanism that kicks in to try to correct this anomaly. So the brain sends out signals to increase dopamine levels(the OTHER hormone that causes a euphoric state that can neutralize the effects of the cortisol)

HENCE, you tend to have an increased urge to eat chocolates or do things that your brain has established can boost dopamine levels from past experience. Shopping could be one such activity. Other people engage in self-defeating behavior like promiscuous sex.

So, in essence, your body is just trying to cope with your depressed state.

There are some people who have cats because they don't want to feel alone, so if they are having a bad day they look to them for comfort.
To comfort yourself... It then gets worse. Be brave and speak to your GP or a self-help group.

Shopping can be an addiction just like drugs or drinking. You shop to thet that "elated" feeling much like a drug addict, gambler or alcoholic gets when they get their high. Endorphins are released during shopping or gambling, mimicking the "good" feelings of not being depressed. However, this only lasts a short while, then you go looking for that high again. I would suggest watching Intervention on Arts & Entertainment. There are a myriad of addictions, including shopping, and best course of treatment.
Everyone loves to feel like they got a killer bargain.
I have been there, done that.
Then I realized that I just did not need 5 pairs of black pants.so I wound up giving alot away.
Do yourself a favor, when the urge to find that one or 7 items that you think you need, sleep on it. If you decide you still need them, then go.
But for every one thing you buy, get rid of something.
Works for me.
