Addiction..?

Why is it that some people get addicted and others dont?
This has bothered me for years, I cant quite get my head around this. I like to have a drink once in a blue moon and never comes before my kid or my family. I just dont see why someone of conscious mind can go drinkin/do drugs/gamble and whatever else without as much of a thought to who they are affecting and what affect this has on them selves.

Answers:
a lot of people have trouble handling their issues and find it easier to turn to drugs or alcohol as being "wasted" seems to make them think their problems are not there, i think the problem is they get addicted to this feeling that nothing matters rather to the drug itself.

hope this helps.
People who are susceptible to addiction have certain differences in their frontal lobe. This part of the brain controls impulses so people who have already found something that activates the dopamine receptors in such a way that is pleasurable to them then this becomes an escape.

All you've heard about addiction being an escape from stress and problems is true, users just haven't comprehended it yet or choose not to.
Some people DO have a predisposition to addiction.
It has become apparent over the last decade that there are certain races and individuals of any race who have a physiological pre-disposition for addiction. MANY studies have been done and apparently someone who is pre-disposed to substance addiction is 10 times more likely to become addicted to a substance he or she is using than someone without the pre-disposition. The greatest likelyhood is that it is an inherited trait. This does NOT of course remove all of the responsibility for the addiction from that individual, it simply explains why some become addicted and some others do not, given the same exposure to the same substance over time
Addiction is a diease that needs to be treated just as any other life threatening diease should be.
There are drug treatment facilities that are there to support and show the drug user that there is a alternitive way of living and learn the tools needed to stay drug free.
You are lucky not to have the kind of background, influences and problems that can lead to this kind of mind-set and, I'm afraid, it's going to be very difficult for you to get a grip of! Take care.
I think some people just don't have the resources.or don't choose to use them.when they feel like escaping.

Though it's still debatable whether some people are "pre-disposed" or not, the fact is we all get the same equipment (i.e., one brain with the requisite neurotransmitters, one liver, etc.). Some of us just don't take as good care of that equipment as others.

It's untrue that alcohol or drugs affect some people differently than others.we all react the same. It's the way we rate that reaction, whether we think it's good or bad, whether we decide to immerse ourselves in it, that differs from person to person. It's likely this is all socially developed.
People who are addicts are "wired" differently than you. They are genetically predisposed to be addicts. These genetic and behavioral differences explain why willpower alone isn't enough for them to stop. Most addicts, at some point, want to stop. But when addict drinks (or uses drugs), the phenomenon of craving sets in and they begin to obesess about the next use. Addicts don't clearly see the effect of drugs on themselves or the people around them (like you can). Even when they've had disastrous consequences, they truly believe they can repeat the behavior and get different results. That's the insanity of the disease.

Of course you can't understand it. You don't have the disease, so you don't have the same mental processes as someone who is an addict. For example - I'm a heterosexual male and I don't understand how men can be attracted to each other. But that doesn't mean their attraction isn't real, or that there is something wrong with it -- It's just not the way my brain is "wired."

So there's not a simple answer to your questions. But it is clear there are genetic factors, behavioral factors and environmental factors that are all at play in determining whether someone will be addicted.
