I think first you'd better apologise to your ex, they may get the police involved and it may get worse..
Just say that it was a stupid thing to do and that you're sorry that you did it, they can't get that angry if you tell them straight.
If he pissed you off with words and you retaliated with actions that have destroyed his personal property then of course you should feel guilty. How would you like it if the situation were reversed?
