Merely....The power of Suggestion!
Do you mean Hypnotist as therapist or stage.
A therapist talks you into a state of relaxation and when relaxed give you suggestions to help you overcome something like smoking etc! If you really want to give up it works though number of visits varies>
Stage hypnotists just tell you to do something silly. There are only a certain number of ways to react and they know them! They target different groups to produce a certain result.
i don`t know how they do it but iv`e always wanted to be hypnotised by one of those sort of hypnotist s who regress you into your past lives .That would be something if it worked don`t you think. When i watched it on TV the Hypnotist wasn``t saying anything much she was playing some Indian sort of music and burning candles and incense and that sort of thing.
I think it does have a lot to do with the power of suggestion, but also that people differ in terms of how "suggestible" they are. I think it is also like the placebo effect: people expect something to happen, so it does. I think it also has to do with how easily people are able to slip into a trance-like state.
I guess I view it as an altered state of consciousness that is caused by 1) the hypnotist's ability to project a sense of power or expertise, 2) the subject's willingness, expectations and ability to enter an altered state of consciousness.
