Psychotherapy in Ireland and in Europe

Psychotherapy is now just over 100 years old. Apart from a long established psychoanalytic practice in Monkstown, Co. Dublin, psychotherapy is relatively new in Ireland. As with any new profession, it takes time to establish itself.

Given the nature of the profession of psychotherapy in particular, the members are very aware of the need to be active in regulating both the trainings and the practice of psychotherapy, to safeguard public interest and to promote excellence in the profession overall. We continue to advise the Department of Health and Children of the developments within our organisation and are active in lobbying for statutory registration for psychotherapists.

Over the past 23 years, training programmes and psychotherapy services have become available here. Prior to this, those who wished to become psychotherapists had to go abroad for formal training but thankfully, many returned to work in Ireland and have become the pioneers in psychotherapy training and practice. Professional trainings are now available and well established in Ireland in both the training institutes and Universities.

As well as engaging in all the activities required by a professional organisation in Ireland, the ICP is a National Awarding Organisation of the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP). The ICP holds a seat on the Governing Board of the EAP and on both the National Umbrella Awarding Organisation committee and the Training Standards committee. The European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) is awarded by the EAP through the National Awarding Organisations in the respective country .

The ICP, as the organisation in Ireland representing the broadest range and greatest number or practitioners, was granted national awarding status in June 1999. We are currently in the process of accrediting our existing practitioners in relation to the European Certificate and ensuring that all training courses in Ireland are meeting the European standard. The criteria for the awarding of this Certificate form the minimum training requirements and entry criteria for all modalities of psychotherapy
