How do you balance being a strong cultural black person and being a practising Christian?

I love my roots but I also love the Lord and sometimes I struggle with certain aspects of Christianity which condemns spirituality of African cultures and describes this as paganism.

Answers:
the Celts were pagan too and when they accepted Christianity their culture flourished and gave the world some really beautiful artwork, literature and music. Christ does not want to take your culture/ roots away from you. I see a lot of Africans who still worship God in a " home-grown " way and it is very vibrant, joyful and pleasing to God.
I don't know enough of your practices to go in-depth.
i dont think you can mix & match religeon with conflicting beliefs, which is why i think just being a spiritual & decent person is enough
We have to set aside things in our past that we used to believe or do that we know conflicts with our Christianity. I was brought up in a non-christian religion and had to do the same. It's hard and family members may not like you for it but we are looking for the praise of God not men.
That's a tough one--but you can celebrate many, many things about your culture without celebrating some of the wrong spiritual choices of some of your ancestors. This is the same in every culture I think. Tradition is one of the biggest hindrances to true Christianity.
Everyone will get different things from Christianity -- so take what is important to you and believe what you deem is needed for your soul.
You speak of culture and you give it a color and then you speak of culture and give it an ethnic orientation. Have you ever looked up what black means in the dictionary? It's a generalized racial termonilogy that does not define us as a people. We are African Americans. In regards to your spirituallality question, originally Africans did not dress up on Sundays and go to church in big fancy buildings. If you truly want an aspect on the religous culture of Africans you should research it and it's up to you to decide which worship you choose. I wouldn't follow a group who would critisize and belittle the beliefs of my ancestors. "Christians" have forced their views on every culture that they come in contact with and try to make them worship their way because they feel ONLY their way is the right way. The natives of this land have managed to maintain and keep their ancestors beliefs alive and they practice their old ways. WE don't. I know that the Bible was written by caucasian men and expressed the views of caucasian men and referred to US as evil and I believe it is biased and contradictory. Christians do not recognize Jesus as "a dark skinned man with hair of wool" as described in the Bible. They have him with pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes! I don't struggle with Christian views because I have my own. I believe in the spirit that created us all and I have faith in that spirit BUT, I do not believe it has to be what the Christian dictates.
just follow the teachings of Jesus, if you have given your life to him you surely meant your whole life, even the bits it's hard to give up.
The ledged edge of truth is difficult to fathom.
